This 2.5" icon has a story. It goes like this:
To Japanese folklore, Urashima Taro, a simple fisherman, caught a tortoise which he kindly returned to the sea. The tortoise revealed herself to be the beautiful daughter of the underwater Dragon King. As a reward Urashima and the girl were married. Here Urashima rides his tortoise wife on a return visit to land, carrying the magic box she gave him. The original ivory netsuke is in the collections of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
